One of the reasons that pocket PC units from HP and other sources are so popular is that you can really configure them to do any number of different tasks. The iPAQ models from HP as well as the handheld PC models from companies such as Dell and others have all been outfitted with the versatility that allows them to act as a number of different things. If you can think of some sort of mobile functionality that you would find helpful, then chances are there is a way for you to configure your pocket PC to do that for you. One of the things that handhelds are very popularly used for nowadays is as GPS and what is surprising so some is that the procedure that is involved with you actually going ahead and configuring your pocket PC to act as a GPS device is not that difficult after all.
There are some things that you might need for it, including a GPS transponder and of course some sort of hands free setup in your card with voice recognition would also be helpful. If you combine those two with the presence of the pocket PC itself in the car, then you have everything that you need in order to make the GPS functionality good enough that you could benefit from it in your car.
Now, that has to do with the hardware. Ultimately, you are going to want the software as well and when you are dealing with computer software, there are a whole different set of concerns that you need to look at. One of those concerns happens to be the fact that GPS pocket PC units need removable memory most of the time to deal with resource intensive applications and GPS software is most definitely resource intensive.
Setting it up however is not that difficult to do. The difficult part is in learning how to use the software so that it will actually do something useful for you later on down the road. The important part of that has to do with the fact that GPS devices and software packages are based on concepts drawn by Geographic Information Systems. These are information systems that combine database management with actual map overlays and so your understanding of how they work can allow you to understand what their limitations are.
For example; a database can certainly pull information up for you and a Geographic Information System can put in on a map, but the information available is only as good as the database itself. Therefore, in the interests of your GPS being useful for you, making sure that you always have an updated database should be high up on your priority list. Things like this are what you should be thinking about more than setting up the GPS, because truth be told that is the easier part of the two.

| Choosing the Right iPAQ Model |
| One of the things about pocket PC units that is very impressive to a number of people that haven’t dealt with them before is the fact that there is so much choice available to people nowadays when it comes to handheld devices. It wasn’t so long ago that even using the term handhelds in the plural was a weird thing to do because companies only had one or two of them that had more functionality than a modern day calculator. We’ve come a long way in a very short time and when you look at product lines like Dell or HP, you can see that not only are there a lot available, but there are a lot of specialized units for people that are interested in getting their specific needs met. We can expand on this principle and illustrate it further by looking at one specific product line; the HP iPAQ product line. more |
