Choosing the Right iPAQ Model

One of the things about pocket PC units that is very impressive to a number of people that haven’t dealt with them before is the fact that there is so much choice available to people nowadays when it comes to handheld devices. It wasn’t so long ago that even using the term handhelds in the plural was a weird thing to do because companies only had one or two of them that had more functionality than a modern day calculator. We’ve come a long way in a very short time and when you look at product lines like Dell or HP, you can see that not only are there a lot available, but there are a lot of specialized units for people that are interested in getting their specific needs met. We can expand on this principle and illustrate it further by looking at one specific product line; the HP iPAQ product line.
Now, one of the things that you will want to look at first is what you want the specific purpose of your iPAQ to be. Do you want to use it primarily as a GPS device? If that is the case, then the HP iPAQ RX5915 is the model that you would probably want to take a closer look at. Alternatively, there are other models of HP iPAQ devices that take a look at either pocket PC functionality or alternatively a combination of iPAQ, phone and camera. There are a number of different models available in both of these formats and therefore understanding which format you want to begin with will be the first step towards narrowing that list down.
After format, the next thing that you would probably want to consider is price. Generally, at the current moment in the iPAQ market, $400 is the border between prices in today’s world. So when you take a look at iPAQ models such as the RX4240 that are under $400 and you compare them to iPAQ models such as the RX5915 that are above $400, the features are obviously going to be different. But $400 is definitely the tipping point between low and high end devices, so if you are looking more for features and functionality than necessarily for price, definitely keep that in mind.
Weight is also another concern for some people, although for most people it’s not really that big a deal. HP tends to classify their iPAQ models as either weighing under or over five ounces. That is really where the division exists in today’s iPAQ line, just as the monetary division exists at $400. So, if you are looking for a comparatively light model, you will want to take a look at models that happen to be less than five ounces in weight.
