Can You Restore a Deleted File? The Truth About Retrieving a Lost File

While computers have become an essential tool for business and personal life new technologies always come with some problems and risks no matter what other good they give to society. The sheer amount of files and documentation we manage to accumulate on our computers can be staggering and With many of them being effectively junk that can be deleted we find yourself sorting, storing and deleting files constantly often when we are not paying an awful lot of attention and then it happens; You delete a really important file! To restore a deleted file you rush to the recycling bin only to find you have emptied it and now it is gone forever! Or is it?

Retrieving a lost file can seem like impossibility, none of the operating systems have any real way of getting them back. Some have rollback systems that can go back to earlier versions of the computer but this can often undo new information you need as well making this a poor solution. Many will simply say this is just bad luck, the file is gone; this is not completely true however.

You see files are stored differently than you might think on a computer, the data for a file is written on a hard drive and the operating system only knows it is there because it has a reference to where it is stored on the hard disk. This pointer is essential for the operating system to be able to locate the file and subsequently be able to show it as an icon on your screen for you to manipulate into folder, open, move and so on. This is just a graphical representation of your file in a way that we find easy to use. When you permanently delete a file what you actually do is remove the pointer to this file from your operating system which effectively means it does not exist as it cannot be found. However the data is still there on the hard disk it is just lost! The data will remain on the hard disk in the same location until it is overwritten by another file or program. This means that most space on a hard disk is random files and files parts that have been dereferenced and also means it is possible to get a lost file back if you know how to do it!

However to restore a deleted file you need to have a program that knows how to scan your hard disk and find a file without a pointer and then assign it one for the operating system so it can once again be used. So we see retrieving a lost file is possible with the right tools, if you have an important file sitting on your hard disk somewhere you can get it back ... see below for more information!

Revitalize Your Computer With A System Clean

If you are using Windows, then you know how important it is to keep your system clean and running smooth. If your system is not running as well as you would like it to, you don't need to do a complete, clean install of your system. You can use a few techniques to keep your system running like new.

If your system is showing signs of being slow, you should be very pro-active in getting your system back in shape. The freeware program Ccleaner is a great tool in getting your system clean. You can download and install it very easily. Granted, there are many programs out there that do the same thing and may even do it better, but I stick with the programs I trust. When I am working on a system, it is usually the first program I put on the system.

When running it for the first time, you should start by doing a system clean. It will take a while the first time it runs as it cleans off all of your old cache files, temporary files and a myriad of other useless bloat. I usually follow this up with a registry cleaning. I let it delete all of the errors it finds in the registry. You may have more than 100 or 200 errors making your registry much harder to read and giving you a slow boot up.

Next I look into what programs are running at boot time. It seems like every program wants to run as soon as the computer starts up. Many of them are useful if you actually use them most of the time when you boot up, but some just slow you computer up. For example, I don't usually read Adobe Acrobat files every time I use the computer. I would rather spend a few extras seconds waiting for Reader to start up when I need to use than adding a few seconds every time I boot up my computer. If in doubt of any process in the CCleaner start up programs list, just Google the name before deleting the entry.

Now is also a good time to take a look at your installed programs. If you never use a program and it is easily downloadable from the web, then it might be a good idea to uninstall the program. This way you can clear some disk space, some registry space and reduce your level of bloat.

After I finish doing the spring cleaning work with CCleaner, I usually do a full virus scan and full spyware scan. The goal is to get rid of all of the junk that is slowing up your computer and these are two of the biggest culprits. Remember, if you are positive for virus or spyware, it's a good idea to run the scans again after you reboot your computer.

Finally, my cleaning of the computer ends with a simple defragmentation of the hard drive. This makes your computer be able to access information on your hard drive much more quickly since a file will be located in one place on your physical disk instead of many different places. You can run a defragmenter straight your Start Menu under System Tools.

If you can follow these steps, you can make your computer run better and quicker instead of slower and clunkier. You can take control of your computer and not have to think about an expensive upgrade just to keep getting acceptable performance from your computer.

Green Computing With Refurbished Laptops

We no longer live in the ‘throw away’ age of discarding products simply because they have developed a small fault or we are after the latest and greatest new model. Protecting our Earth is now a big priority for most people and businesses, therefore we are adapting our lifestyles to do everything we can to help preserve our planet for future generations. Instead of throwing a laptop in the bin simply because one of the components has failed or it is no longer considered to be up-to-date, more and more people are turning to recycling or ‘refurbishing’ as an environmentally sound option.

Recycling can be done in a number of ways, selling the laptop for spares, donating it to charities that supply third world countries or by selling it to a refurbishing company such as http://eflexcomputers.com Companies such as this will offer you money for old laptops, whether they function or not, and then refurbish them and put them back into the marketplace. The refurbishing process is carried out by professionals and incorporates the following stages.

The laptop is fully wiped of all personal data, programs, software etc and taken to a ‘blank’ state. This not only protects the previous owner from having any information stolen but also ensures the system is totally clean of any viruses or issues that could prevent it functioning properly. The hardware then undergoes rigorous testing to ensure that all of the components are functioning correctly and that they still have a good life left in them. If any of the components aren’t functioning correctly or are identified as only having a short life span left they are replaced with new parts. Fresh versions of all the software including operating system, required drivers, anti-virus programs etc are then re-installed on the laptop effectively returning it to the same state as when it was first sent out of the factory.

Refurbished laptops are generally considered by a lot of people to more reliable then systems bought directly after manufacture. This is due the fact they have been operated for some time and so any issues with faulty hardware have been picked up and resolved.

Refurbished laptops offer a lot of benefits over buying a new model. The instant one you will see is the huge savings you can make on the price. For the sake of some cosmetic marks that wont effect functionality at all you can save up to 50% on high street prices. The second benefit is the huge impact on the environment. New laptops produce a lot of harmful gases and toxins during the manufacturing process that damage our environment. The refurbished option means 1 less new laptop being manufactured and 1 less old laptop sitting on the local tip!

PC Laptop Computers - Criteria for Choosing Laptop Computers

In today’s highly mobile world, Laptop Computers are increasingly becoming necessities instead of the luxuries they once were. This is especially true for businessmen, students, and professionals who want to take their information and get their communication anytime, anywhere. However, the sheer number of brands in the market can be very bewildering to the newbie in the mobile computing world. Not all laptops are created equal. The features, both in the physical sense and in the storage capacity, cater to different markets, different needs, and different strokes. With that being said, here are the things you must remember when considering the purchase of laptop computers.

Faster Processor

Ideally, the processor must be the fastest in its segment to enable computing speeds that will keep up with your equally fast lifestyle. Most tech geeks will recommend Intel Core 2 Duo as the fastest in the market at present.

Higher Memory Capacity

Often, it is better to opt for the higher memory capacity because you will be saving yourself the trouble of upgrades, not to mention the costs, later on. Although 1GB is sufficient and 2GB is better, opt for 4GB if your budget allows it.

Again, the higher the capacity and the faster the speed of the hard disk, the better. You will need the extra space when your data (i.e., software, photos, videos, documents) increase with constant use.

Preferred Screen Size and Resolution

When it comes to the laptop computers’ screens, you will have more leeway as it basically boils down to your preferences. You will be confused with tech-geek terminologies like screen resolution, passive/active screens and aspect ratio so the best thing to do is to test drive the laptops until you find one that suits your viewing needs.

Longer Battery Life

Your laptop will only be as good as its battery. Nowadays, the normal battery life is 2-3 hours although the MacBook Pro can last as long as 5 hours. Just remember that the more batteries your laptop has, the more expensive it becomes but the price will be worth it.

Wireless and Wired Mobile Connectivity

Ideally, your laptop must have mobile connectivity options in both the wireless (WiFi) and wired networks. You will have more opportunities to connect to the virtual world when you have both options, which will make your life easier especially when telecommuting.

Multi-Media Options

Nowadays, laptop computers are becoming an all-in-one entertainment-cum-business device. As such, you will need sufficient ports to plug in external devices like a mouse and printer, a memory stick and scanner, and even your digital camera must be accommodated by your laptop. And if you are a movie fan, you should consider buying a laptop with a built-in CD/DVD drive.

Physical Appearance

Fortunately, the physical appearance of laptops nowadays is unquestionably becoming more and more fashionable. You can virtually drool over their sleek, smooth and stylish aesthetics that laptop covers, sleeves and bags are often necessary evils. And with designs in various colors, textures and prints, you will definitely find a laptop that appeal to your personal sense of style!

When purchasing a Laptop, Notebook or Netbook Computer, just remember these criteria and you will ultimately find your perfect Mobile Computer.

Pitfalls to Avoid When Buying a Consumer PC for Business Use

Business managers are regularly warned in the electronics media and elsewhere, to consider the risks of buying cheaper consumer PCs for daily business workloads - but many small firms are still choosing the cheaper models to keep costs down. Such businesses make the assumption that buying consumer class PCs for company use will be cheaper in the long run. But is this truly the case?

The basic answer is to consider the purpose which the PC has to fulfill, and to consider reliability issues in tandem.

Many small businesses only use PCs for emailing and sending documents, plus of course spreadsheets and letters and perhaps also an accounts package too. Not all departments or individuals in the business need access to Server Class equipment on their desks. In these instances, the temptation to buy cheaply at the consumer end is difficult to resist, especially when taking in the fact that failure rates of cheaper PC's continues to be very low, with most problems encountered being caused by software.

So, is it true that despite cost pressures, buying consumer devices is no match for professional business-class hardware? Are many shop-bought computers are not rigorously tested to meet business needs?

Clearly, buying cheaply is only a good idea until a computer failure affects business and damages cash-flow. So as well as a cost difference, there is definitely the business continuity liability to consider. And does the consumer-focused PC have all the applications and tools to really help businesses?

It is a fact that business-oriented computers have no "special ingredient" to make them more reliable - they all come from the same factories as consumer-oriented computers and they use the same parts. Often the main difference is simply the style of the case, the version of Windows preinstalled and the cost. And they do not necessarily come with business applications preinstalled either.

Hence the best advice for business users is exactly the same as that given to consumer or home users - buy the PC which suits the purpose. Often, in the case with memory-hungry business applications, this is a matter of looking at the PC's processor. Buying a Celeron type processor for a business PC is not a good idea if fast performance is needed. That immediately rules out the cheapest PCs, where a Celeron processor is usually specified. Again, Celeron is fine - and can save costs - as long as your eyes remain open to the limits of it performance. For memory-hungry applications, at least Intel Core 2 Duo for today's Microsoft Office packages is a wise investment. Combined with the right Processor type, the largest affordable amount of RAM would be a good matching idea.

Hence, a good place to start when considering a business PC is to look at the array of online stores which cater for business. There, hardware specifications relevant to a range of business styles are likely to be found, along with ideas for an upgrade in business computing style to server-based computing. It is in server-based computing where small businesses on an upward growth path are likely to find an overwhelming case for deployment of hardware fit for long-term business efficiency.

Top 8 Computer Maintenance Tips

Owning a computer leads to having to maintain it, and unfortunately for many of us this can be seen as a cumbersome process. But if you follow the simple guidelines listed below you'll find that maintaining your computer is really not as hard as it may appear. These steps will not only aid in giving you better performance but can prevent future problems with the operation of your computer.

Here are the top 8 tips for maintaining your computer and ensuring you get the most out of it...

1. Windows Updates. Although this is often seen as a chore, it's important to have your windows updates set to "Automatic". This ensures that your computer is receiving all the latest updates and patches from Microsoft automatically. By having this enabled you'll be protected against all the latest security holes that may infect other computers that are not updated.

2. Defragmenter. It's a known fact that defragmenting your computer on a bi-monthly basis can result in smoother performance. This aids in making your hard drive faster (and we all want a faster hard drive).

3. Virus, Spyware, Adware Protection. It's crucial to ensure proper maintenance of your computer that you have real time protection for viruses, Spyware and Adware. This aids in the smooth operation of your computer.

4. Disk Cleanup. Windows has a built in disk cleanup system that will clean and free space on your hard drive. You should run this monthly or bi-monthly to ensure your hard drive is optimized for space. To find this option you can go to start, program, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup.

5. Startup Limit. You should limit the number of applications that load at startup. You can edit this option using the "msconfig" option that can be typed as a command in windows using the run command. You'll then be able to edit the programs that load at startup. By limiting the number of applications at startup, you'll have a better operating computer at boot time, while operational, and at shut down.

6. Windows Firewall. By default Windows has a built in firewall. This is especially important for users with high speed connections. Ensure that you have your firewall enabled to limit any intrusions.

7. Temporary Files. Be sure to remove temporary internet files and windows temp files periodically as these can lead to unnecessary disk space that can further slow down your computer. By clearing these files you free space on your computer.

8. Shutdown Computer. Many of us get lazy and just leave the computer on overnight. This can actually lead to memory issues and will slow down the overall performance of your computer. Ensure that you shut down your computer overnight or when not in use. Also try to never turn off the computer without Windows completely shutting down first or it can lead to drive failure.

These are just basic computer maintenance tips you can follow to aid in maintaining your computer. It will lead to overall better performance, and will give your computer more durability.

How To Create Safe Passwords For Online Accounts

When you register an account on any web site, you are asked to come up with your own personal password for ongoing access. Most people, unfortunately, use the same password for every web site that they sign up for - and that can be fine, as long as you use a secure method of creating a password. Using a unique, secure password is extremely important because it is the only protection you have of preventing someone from using your online information, such as your bank account, credit card accounts, and other vital information. If your password is stolen or compromised, the thief can use that information to also obtain your identity and use your information to ruin your credit and cause you all manner of grief.

To avoid such a consequence, you should create what is called a "strong password," which means a password that people will not be able to retrieve simply from knowing you and information about you, such as your first name, birthday, Social Security number, or other weak passwords that people use because they are so easy to remember. That's why they are also so easy to steal!

Worse yet, people who randomly hack into computer systems to obtain passwords of people whom they do not know at all are also a constant threat. Identity theft is on the rise, and you do not want to make it too easy for the thieves to get a hold of important information that they can use for themselves and against you.

There are some simple guidelines which you should follow to create a strong password for your online use. The first rule is to make sure you have a long password. The longer the password, the more likely that a thief will not be able to figure it out. Most websites require that passwords be structured with at least 6 characters of letters, numbers or both. However, you should use at least 8 or more characters - every additional character making up a password makes it exponentially more difficult to hack.

Another important component of making a strong password is to create a one that includes a combination of both letters and numbers. If the web site or software you are using permits symbols as part of a password, that it is even more secure.

Also, use character variations. For example, use an equal combination of letters and numbers and not just 7 letters and 1 number. If you do use all letters or all numbers, make your password is longer so that it is more difficult to determine. The best passwords are those that do not include words in the dictionary, such as random characters and numbers.

Using punctuation marks, and other symbols make your password unique, so do not be afraid to use them as well. You should never use repeated characters such as 1111, or consecutive characters such as ABCD. This makes the password weak and very capable of being hacked into.

Lastly, do not use your login name or any part of your actual name to create a password. Criminals will always try your name, birthday, kid's names, and other personal information first so it is important to pick a password that has nothing to do with you personally. Just make sure you write down your password and put it someone safe so that you will always remember it.

4 Ways to Back Up your Computer

If you've heard it once you've heard it a million times - you need to back up the information on your computer. Hard drives *do* crash sometimes and it can be heartbreaking to lose all that information - documents, pictures, videos and so on. Even worse if you work online as I do.

Then you've got the chances of fire, theft and so on.

Sorry to sound negative but it is important - and I think too few people take this topic seriously.

Once you've made the commitment to back up your files though, how do you actually go about it?

Well here are 4 common methods for you to consider before making a decision:

1) CD

Easy and cheap, saving important files onto CD is a popular method. They're small and reasonably hardwearing and can be stored in a locked box or safe in the home.

It does mean however that you need to pick and choose *which* files you're going to back up as taking a complete copy of a well-stuffed hard drive and trying to squeeze it onto CDs would require a heck of a lot of discs.

In addition, appreciate that if it is fire, there is a risk the discs themselves could get damaged and make all your efforts worthless.

2) Flash Drive

Typically only stretching to a gig or so of memory these USB Flash Drives won't hold too many files again but are simple to use. Simply plug one into an available USB port to read or write to it.

You have the same problem as with the discs in the case of a fire unless you decide, as some people do, to keep the Flash Drive on your person at all times, such as using it as a keyring.

3) External Hard Drive

A good-sized external hard drive will enable you to back up your whole hard drive - a real boon - meaning there won't be any files you have to sacrifice in the interests of space.

You can also set up a piece of software such as x that will *automatically* back up your computer to your hard drive when you specify.

Once again, if there is a fire (or theft) you may be in trouble, and appreciate that while costs are coming down all the time this is still a far more expensive option to implement than either of those above.

4) External File Backup Service

These services function in such a way that whenever you log onto the Internet they will take a copy of every file on your hard drive and save them in a remote location. This location is built specially to store sensitive data and they are typically fire proof, bomb proof etc. and give your data the highest levels of protection available to the average joe on the street.

You *do* need to be aware of course that if you don't log onto the Internet very often your files won't be updated very often, that as all this to-ing and fro-ing of files is going on in the background there is a chance your Internet connection may run a little slower than usual and lastly some people are rather concerned about having their person files (diary, emails, will etc.) stored in a location they have little control over.

Your files are, however, likely far safer than with any of the other 3 options.

So which is the best method?

Well, it's not that straightforward I'm afraid.

Its a decision best left to the individual. I personally went for option 4 and set myself up with external storage because then no matter what happens (bearing in mind how often I'm on the Internet) all my most precious of files are stored safely for retrieval in the unfortunate event that I need them.

Combine All Your IM Contacts In One Screen On Any Computer

One of the huge things about the Internet is that we can be in contact with people regardless the distance. Even though this benefit was already provided by the email, the new thing is that we can be in touch with people in real-time. This technology, known as instant messaging (IM) works through a local program that connects to a remote server to which other users are also logged. The server then works as a 'hub' letting each user 'see' which contact is connected at that moments and allows to interact in several ways, such as text-chatting, video conferencing and share files and information. Easy to understand why, IM became 'instant' success. The pioneer of IM was ICQ and quickly received millions of members who could enjoy its many attractive features. Of course, other companies rapidly got into the stream and generated their own IM networks. Unfortunately, didn't see this as a community phenomenon and tried to mine their own business making their IM services incompatible with all the other ones and initiating a fierce competition to convince people to join their networks (and not the others). Although competition is good and usually brings progress, in the case of IM is also carried an intrinsic difficulty: is you stick to a single IM service you are leaving behind the possibility of getting in touch with people who don't use your service. So, if you don't want restrictions about who you want to have available for instant chatting, you are bound to sign up with several IM services and have your contacts spread through several windows in your screen. This is not only bothersome, it makes your computer slower by inefficiently occupying too much bandwidth and memory resources.

For these and other advantages, instant messaging has become to be the fastest-growing medium of communication in history. It is even growing twice as quick as the email. But what if you were able to overcome IM's worst problem? Now everyone is able to combine all of their IM contacts in a single list, whichever service they belong to. An experienced company has put together a new kind of social networking website that some view as a direct threat to the leading social networks. The new network is called uVme and combines the features that make sites like Facebook or Myspace so successful. One of the most exciting features of uVme is its advanced instant messaging tool.

Besides of providing complete IM capabilities, uVme IM service can automatically combine all of your contacts from other services such as Yahoo! Messenger, Windows Live (MSN) Messenger, AIM (AOL's IM), Google Talk, ICQ and others. By using uVme you can have all of your contacts on a single window, regardless from which network they come.

A typical IM service works through a standalone application that must be downloaded and installed on the computer where you'll be chatting. This means downloading and installing every time you change computers and every time they upgrade the software. For worse, you need to have up to six or seven programs running at the same time in order to keep track of all your contacts, which means using up more bandwidth and more memory resources. With uVme you don't need to install anything. Its IM service is web-based, working on your browser as soon as you log into the website. So, instead of being a standalone application that you have to download and install. This IM service runs live on your uVme web page.

As soon as somebody goes to uVme, they will automatically be logged in to your IM and will appear to you as an online contact. You can instantly greet them and talk and challenge them to play a game. Yes, gaming is a strong part of the uVme concept and is adding new exciting and addictive online games on a daily basis. Although their IM service is worth enough for becoming a member, uVme has other features just as exciting. Check out the website at the bottom to learn more about this new service, which is set to become a new revolution.

Apple Computers: Creating Waves!.

The ripples created by the computer manufacturers could be seen in the sky rocketing sales of these devices. Just to allure more and more consumers, the manufacturers are lowering down the prices and are releasing more sophisticated gadgets. With so many laptops doing the rounds in the markets, the consumers are now in a fix to choose form the best.

Companies like HCL and Acer have recently come up with their mid-range laptops and desktops. They are targeting students and home users as their potential buyers. Purchasing a laptop from anyone of them is technically same, yet there is a huge difference in all these devices. Before laying your hands on any one of these electronic goods, there are several aspects which the consumer has to take care of.

Whether you are buying desktop or a laptop, the first and the foremost thing that a consumer should look for is whether it is for personal use or for professional usage. If the main purpose is for personal use then the traditional desktop is suitable but if you belong to the category where you have to travel a lot then laptop is the safest bet. The truth that desktop computers are cheaper than their portable versions allure many customers towards them. Moreover, you can always upgrade your desktop and that too at an affordable price. When it comes to up-gradation, laptops definitely restrict the consumers in this section. And if at all you want to upgrade them to higher versions, they create a huge strain on your pocket. Though the laptops are glaringly mobile, yet they restrict the consumers to go whole heartedly for the laptops.

With many advantages and disadvantages, the biggest question which is still unanswered is which one gives more value for the money? On one hand, the retail chains are offering these products at discounted price, while on the other the online shopping portals are not only giving these products at discounted price but are also clubbing them with free gifts.

The latest buzz in the market is from Apple laptop manufacturers. They are engrossing the market with the latest designs and techniques. Though little costly, the apple desktops computers are considered the best in their own class.

Choosing the Best Computer Model

Computer Families and Models

Many computer manufacturers, especially such computer giants as IBM, Dell, Gateway, Sony, Apple, etc. issue families (series) of computers. Models of computers in each series have either the same principle of design, or same processor, or have been given diapason of performances. The series can include a base model, and several derivative models. Usually for each type of computer, manufacturers issue series that generally can be divided into 3-4 categories: budget-friendly (at low price), mid-range (at middle price), cutting-edge and ultimate performance (at high and very high prices). IBM, Gateway, Dell and Apple issue computer families not only for Home and Home office, but also for Small, Mid size or Large Businesses. These families can also include the network optimized series.

The needed features

First of all, you have to make a preliminary analysis of your needs to pick a type of computer, and a zone where you might search this computer, for example, for Home or for Small Business. But it is not sufficient.

(see: http://www.cleverace.com/Choosing_type_of_computer.htm)

To understand what kind of computer to buy, you additionally have to determine what computer performance you need: the type of processor, speed, size of memory, type of video and audio cards, type of case, and so on. You can select one from two ways: 1 - to formulate your needs in the process of searching, 2 - to compile a list a hardware requirement for the programs you might want to run

(see: http://www.cleverace.com/Choosing_best_computer_model2.htm.)

Preliminary selection:

To select a computer family, you have to choose one, which the features match, your wishes. Such families can be several. Next procedures are to find the best computer family and best model of computer belonging to this family. If you know the features you need, you can identify the name of the computer family. For this goal you have to use for example, a Table of Features comparison for base models of computer families. For example, according to this Table, if you know that you need a computer only for simple text editing and emailing, your choice is Budget-Friendly Series. On the other hand, if you need for realization of your tasks a computer from Cutting-Edge series , but it is not affordable, your choice can be like a computer from Mid-range series plus a customization (perhaps, when you can better afford it).

To accelerate the search for the preliminary selection, you can find comparison information about the different types of computers with the help a comparison-shopping search engine. It allows you quickly to find the needed products sold by online stores, small businesses, and individuals in diapason of affordable prices. Search can be done by Brand, by Price, by Processor speed, etc. To find what you need, see: http://www.nextag.com/serv/cleverace/buyer/outpdir.jsp

Generally, a preliminary selection can be executed on the basis of not only cost and main functions, but also on an evaluation of convenience of use, warranties, and so on. This kind of selection you can make for computer families of different manufacturers for example, for 3 or 4 families of computer giants. Some companies, such as Gateway, gives to a buyer an opportunity to compare preliminary selected models of computers with "compare" option.

Final selection.

To find the optimal model for yourself, you may make the final selection from the preliminary chosen models. It is much easier to compare 3-4 models, than more than 5 million variants that are available on the Computer Market at the beginning of your search.

Custom built model

If you can't find a computer with the needed performances among the available computers, you need to select a vendor and to order a custom built computer.

See: http://www.cleverace.com/Ordering_custom_built_computers.htm.

Discount

Keep in mind, you can find a cheaper computer for the same model on the Discount Market, because some online stores, especially the computer giants, suggest coupons; or discounts, such as $20 off, when you spend $150 or more; free shipping; free printer; and so

Why There Is A Need To Wipe Free Space

There are practical reasons why you should always make sure you wipe free space on your personal computer. If you are moving out of the office and you have personal and confidential files stored in your office computer, of course, you would strive to delete those files. On the other hand, if your company is aiming to dispose old personal computers to buy brand new units, there is also a need to remove from the hard disk important corporate files that may contain the company's pertinent information, trade secrets, confidential provisions and management initiatives. The problem is that not all people are aware that deleting files on the Windows operating system is usually not enough.

If you have been constantly deleting files in your computer, you might have noticed that sometimes, some of those deleted files would surface and show up again accidentally in the future. That is not an unlikely occurrence. The truth is, when you erase files from the Windows operating system, the file may be nowhere in sight but the truth is, it is still stored in the computer hard drive. Thus, there is a need to wipe free space off your personal computer.

Why is there a need to wipe free space off the computer hard disk? As mentioned in the two scenarios above, there might be personal, confidential and pertinent information in files that have been previously saved and deleted in the personal computer. Even after deleting, you might not be aware of it, but the file erased is usually staying on the disk drive. Even if you empty the Recycle Bin folder, the files are certainly still in the computer memory, somewhere where you could not easily find and retrieve it.

The problem is that there are currently numerous computer programs that are aimed at recovering and retrieving deleted files. Thus, anyone who would get hold and own the computer you are disposing would be able to recover those files as well as the pertinent information. In these days, confidentiality and security of information is very much sought after. There could important and sensitive trade and personal secrets that could be exposed to just about anyone if you would not move to ensure data safety on your personal computer. You need to make sure that other people would not be able to restore and retrieve the information you have already deleted from the computer hard disk.

To wipe free space in your personal computer, you should install a file shredder program. The computer application would effectively wipe off all the files and information you have already deleted from your personal computer. No restoration and retrieval computer program could ever undo the deletion you have made using the file shredder. This way, you can be 100% sure that the sensitive and personal file you have deleted would not be accessed by anyone, who could intentionally use such pertinent information maliciously. What is more luring about file shredders is that you need not invest a significant amount for the program. File shredders are usually downloadable for free, or can be purchased cheaply for just a few tens of dollars.

How to Connect Your Pocket PC Emulator to Your Desktop Computer

Have you tried to connect your Emulator to your host machine with no good results? This is a small article to let you know what might be happening.

When testing applications on your PocketPC or SmartPhone that uses the network, like consuming a web page or a web service, or simply coding an application that opens a connection to a database, you often test them with your own desktop machine acting as the server or host; the same PC where you are running the Emulator. You might have problems to do that but is easy to fix. I have seen some guys telling to setup the network adapter in the device, why? Don’t do that, see, In Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (DMA support) you just do this:

1)Install ActiveSync if you don’t have it yet

2)Run the Emulator

3)Run the Emulator Manager in Visual Studio Tools Menu

4)Find your emulator’s instance and “cradle” it

5)Active Sync will recognize the emulator as a real device and will connect.

Using this approach you can run and test installers and network applications with your Pocket PC Emulator, also notice that your virtual “Pocket PC” will be able to connect to any computer on your network, because now the device is 100% online in your network, so start playing with this.

If your PC does not have any network interface active, a TCP connection from the emulator to the host pc will not work, in that case you need to install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter, this will create a loopback on your PC and the emulator will believe you have a network card working. So you can use the IP on that “virtual” network as the target for the connections from your emulator.

The PDA: Not a Notebook Replacement...Yet!

PDAs are not yet hand-held PCs, but have been used by many people over the years. PDAs are better-known as pocket pc's or palmtop organizers. PDAs have many uses including: mathematics, use as a timekeeper with calendar subroutines, browsing cyberspace, sending and receiving e-mail, video, typewriting and word processing, name and address book functions, making and compiling spreadsheets, reading bar codes, receiving radio broadcasts or stereo listening, playing computer games, entering poll results, and GPS. More modern PDAs also have color screens, MP3 music and telephony capabilities, allowing them to be employed as cellphones (smartphones), web browsers, and portable media players. Several now also include cameras that can photograph scenes which can then be uploaded to Flickr and mySpace accounts. Virtually all newer PDAs can surf the Net, intranets or extranets via Wi-Fi, or Wireless Wide-Area Networks just about all PDA's utilize touch screen displays leaving out Smartphones which depend upon menu systems attributable to their tinier display screens.

PDA's Past

The term "personal data assistant" was first used on Jan 7th, 1992 by then Apple Computer Chief Executive Officer John Sculley at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, concerning the Apple Newton.

PDAs are occasionally denoted as "Palms", "Palm Pilots" or "Palm Tops" so-named after an early personal digital assistant produced by USR and Palm Inc called the "Palm Pilot". Today however, the term is much more encompassing and includes a very diverse range of products developed by a host of many manufacturers including HP, Dell, Blackberry and Sharp to name a few.

.Characteristic capabilities

Presently, a regular PDA has a touch screen for data entry, a memory card slot for data storage and at the least one of the following for device-todevice communication: IrDA, Bluetooth and/or WiFi. All the same, many PDAs (normally those used primarily as cellular phones) may not have a touch screen, alternatively using softkeys, a directional pad and either the numerical computer keyboard or a thumb keyboard for idata nput.

In order to meet the PDA definition, standard software should include an appointment calendar, a task list, an address book for business and personal contacts and some kind of notes program. Internet connected PDAs also usually include E-mail and Web support. Most units also include memo recording software for audio notes. Very handy for remembering important details.

Not Quite A Laptop Replacement...Yet

Possibly, to a higher degree than any other computer device, the personal digital assistant lacks the raw computing horsepower and Wireless Broadband capabilities of a desktop or notebook computer. Presently, costs of laptop computers are coming down. Although a good deal bigger in size, laptop computers have more full-size screens and keyboards and are have greater computing power.

However, the OQO Model 2 has been brought out in recent times as a fully desktop PC compatible PDA with a USB port so that people can use their normal work and business software or play computer games compatible with ubiquitous operating systems such as Windows XP. It can also connect to regular PC peripherals. Costs still have a way to fall prior to mass adoption takes place in the market but OQO is no longer the exclusive manufacturer of these types of units, so costs should fall possibly within the next few years.

Conclusion

The PDAs strength is that it is easy to transport and less bulky than full-sized computers. It slides easily into a dress shirt or trousers pocket. The additional features like cameras, Global Positioning System, telephony and MP3 player make it flexible unlike any other type of computers in the market.

Many people do not require full desktop capabilities while on the go. As long as they can access their information and sync their data to a full-sized computer when they arrive at their homes and offices, that's really all they need and want to do. So at least in the short run, the PDA will most likely remain as a portable helper for millions of users for years to come.
